Please note: Information on the 2009 Freshwater Spills Symposium in St. Louis, MO can be found at http://www.epa.gov/oem/content/fss/fss09/index.htm.
The Freshwater Spills Symposium was established in 1996. This biennial event offers an opportunity for local, state, federal, and industry responders; natural resource trustees and managers; facility response planners; and additional stakeholders to engage in an exchange targeted at the unique problems of freshwater oil spills.
These symposiums emphasize the frequently understated impact of oil spills in inland water bodies. Such spills have a higher potential for public and environmental endangerment because of their tendency to occur close to populated or biologically sensitive areas where they can threaten resources we value and depend upon, such as drinking water, wildlife, and environmentally sensitive areas.
FSS encourages the transfer of technology, promotes the exchange of new ideas, and provides a forum for discussion of issues regarding freshwater oil spills through a series of individual presentations and panel discussions.
The U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency hosted the sixth biennial Freshwater
Spills Symposium (FSS) in Portland, Oregon, May 2-4, 2006. For the first time, short courses were offered in conjunction with the event, on Monday, May
1, 2006.
Through the efforts
of excellent speakers and presenters, the Freshwater Spill Symposium aims
to further our understanding of the challenges posed by oil spills in
freshwater environments, and to expand the resources and information
available. The FSS 2006 Design Team thanks all
participants for imparting their experiences and knowledge of planning for,
preventing, and responding to freshwater oil spills.
