Course Description
Oiled wildlife response is a multidisciplinary and complex component of oil spill response. Protocols based on best available science, and guidelines based on wildlife responder expertise and regulatory requirements are available to help facilitate oiled wildlife response; however, there are a number of additional components that must be incorporated into planning.

These components include Wildlife Branch development and active inclusion into the ICS, proactive industry-based contingency planning, training and exercising, facility availability and preparation, and regional resource capacity building. In all, incorporation of these components into the industry’s overall oil spill response strategy will provide the most effective platform for successful oiled wildlife response efforts.

The Oiled Wildlife Response short course will look at all aspects of oiled wildlife response operations within the above context.

Topics will include:

  • Introduction
  • Response philosophy
  • Wildlife Branch - ICS
  • Facility requirements
  • Health and safety
  • Volunteers
  • Effects of oil on wildlife
  • Best achievable care
  • Animal care overview: reconnaissance, hazing, processing, intake, stabilization, wildlife cleaning, conditioning, relese
